From Chaos to Calm: How We Transformed the Santo Psychotherapy Website

Published by Blue Canary Web Design | Web Design Case Study | Small Business Website Redesign
Every once in a while, a project comes along that's equal parts challenge and joy. Our redesign of Santo Psychotherapy was exactly that: a site that needed help in just about every way a site can need help. We're thrilled with how it turned out, and we think you will be too.
Here's the story of how we took a slow, confusing, animation-overloaded website and turned it into something that actually works for the people it's meant to serve.
The Starting Point: Well-Intentioned, But a Lot to Untangle
Santo Psychotherapy does meaningful, specialized work including helping clients recover from the lasting harm caused by conversion therapy. Their old website, unfortunately, wasn't doing them justice. A few of the biggest issues:
Speed? Not great. The site loaded slowly, which meant potential clients were bouncing before they ever read a single word. In a field where first impressions matter enormously, a laggy website can be a real barrier.
Animations and popups, everywhere. Motion and interactivity can be wonderful in web design. But there's a line between "engaging" and "overwhelming," and the old site had enthusiastically crossed it. Elements were flying in from every direction, popups were competing for attention, and the overall experience felt more like a carnival than a therapy practice.
Navigation that required a map. Finding basic information--services, contact details, who the practice serves--took more clicks and patience than it should have. Visitors shouldn't have to work to find help.
And then there was the big one. The site was inadvertently advertising conversion therapy, a harmful, widely discredited practice, when what Santo Psychotherapy actually offers is recovery from conversion therapy. That's a fundamental misrepresentation of the practice's mission, and for vulnerable clients searching for support, potentially a very harmful message to encounter.
What We Did: Clean, Clear, and Built to Serve
When we sat down to redesign the site, we started with the same question we ask on every project: Who is this website actually for, and what do they need to feel confident reaching out?
For Santo Psychotherapy, that meant people in a vulnerable moment, often looking for something they may never have found before: a therapist who understands what they've been through and can help them heal. The website needed to communicate safety, clarity, and competence immediately.
Here's how we got there:
Performance First
We rebuilt the site with speed as a priority, not an afterthought. Optimized images, cleaner code, and leaner assets all work together to make the site load quickly on any device. Fast websites aren't just better for users... they rank better on Google, too!
Calm and Clear Design
We stripped out the visual noise. No more competing animations. No more popups wrestling for attention. The new design is clean and easy to look at, which, for a psychotherapy practice, is exactly the right tone. Visitors can focus on the information they came for, not fight through distractions to find it.
Intuitive Navigation
Everything a visitor might need--who the practice serves, what services are offered, how to get in touch--is easy to find. We organized the site around the user's journey, not the site owner's assumptions about what comes first.
Getting the Message Right
This one was the most important fix of all. We worked carefully to make sure the site clearly and accurately communicates what Santo Psychotherapy does: mental health for the LGBTQIAA+ community and helping people recover from the harm caused by conversion therapy. It's the difference between a client finding help and a client feeling turned away. Getting the language right was a responsibility we took seriously.
The Result
A website that's fast, calm, clear, and honest about what the practice does and who it serves. A site that respects its visitors' time and emotional state from the first second they land on it.
We're proud of this one.
